![]() That’s good on paper, but without some structure around the core risk objects, it will be hard to formulate risk questions. Wildly varying data structures offer a good starting point, and one basic premise of a data lake is its ability to work with any structure. There are a few important attributes that push our Risk Data Lake over and above a vanilla data lake, including: a defined risk schema, risk data preparation utilities, risk microservices, and access to third-party risk data. What are the essential components of the RMS Risk Data Lake, and how is it different from a vanilla data lake? The short answer is that what we are building at RMS is an “applied” data lake designed to make risk analytics simpler for data engineers, data scientists, actuaries, data analysts, and developers. I’ll touch on some of these exploratory risk analytics, but before that, let’s start with some basic definitions. This requires the unification of distinct datasets that represent risk and then programmatically animating those datasets to help answer risk-related questions. RMS Intelligent Risk Platformīut for exploratory analyses, we need to go beyond the applications and open up ad hoc risk analytics. These applications deal with known datasets and common paths. At RMS, we started by building a platform and applications that can help deliver exposure and loss analytics: Risk Modeler ™ software and the ExposureIQ ™, TreatyIQ ™, SiteIQ ™, and UnderwriteIQ™ applications, among others. In this blog, I will explore what a risk-focused data lake is and why it is critical for new risk insights. It builds on top of typical data lake architecture to go beyond what a “vanilla” data lake can do. Over the past two years at RMS®, we have started putting building blocks in place for the RMS Risk Data Lake™. Combining all this with an engine to query, transform, connect, enrich data, and extract new insights (using a service such as Apache Spark, Presto, etc.).Building a data catalog using the data in the lake (using a service such as AWS Glue, Alation, etc.). ![]() Unifying various data formats and structures (including streaming, batched inputs from various file formats using structured, semistructured, and nonstructured data formatted in relational, nested, columnar formats such as CSV, JSON, Parquet, Avro, etc.).Whatever the nuanced name used, the implementation of a data lake boils down to: Recently, some vendors have been using the terms “lake house” and “data mesh,” which combine elements of data lakes, data warehouses, and federated querying. Nowadays, many companies maintain more than one data lake – they might have one focusing on customer- or marketing-related insights, another focusing on security and compliance, product analytics, and so on. A data lake helps simplify analytics by bringing large, distinct sources of data together under one architecture to drive the extraction of new insights. ![]() While the “data lake” has been around for some time, the term might still be unfamiliar to many.

Large installations like these helped drastically reduce the cost per watt of electricity for business owners that use enormous amounts of power. Perhaps the best way of explaining Tasker is to give some examples of what it can do: it can start playing podcasts when your phone connects to your car stereo, it can reply to a "where are you?" text with your GPS location, it can turn on your smart lights at sunset, it can pause background music playback when a particular app is open (and resume it afterwards), and so on and so on. Sadun presents single-task recipes for common iOS development tasks, including designing and organizing effective user interfaces, responding to users. The possibilities are almost limitless, provided you can get your head around it to begin with. It combines triggers (such as reaching a location, or opening up a particular app) with actions (so turning off Wi-Fi, or boosting screen brightness). For the completely uninitiated, Tasker - which does cost $3.49 - lets you add extra customizations and automations to Android phone. ![]() Red anemones are double flowers with curved, poppy-like petals that spread out from a dark button center.ĭespite not being a very long-lived flower, anemones are still very popular due to their bright and appealing appearance which can be easily cultivated and does not need much effort to grow. It refers to the particular shade of a color and how dark or how light that particular color is. Valueįortunately, value is a little bit easier to understand. This is because teal is a mixture of blue and green. By the same token, a desk that is teal in color would also have a blue hue, along with the green one. In other words, a desk that is entirely blue would have a blue hue. ![]() When you’re looking at virtually any other object, the hue is the main color that creates the base for whatever you’re seeing. Each and every one of those colors are hues. When you look at a rainbow, you see all kinds of different colors. Think of it in terms of something you can visualize. If you’re scratching your head right now, don’t worry, you’re not alone. If that’s not confusing enough, tertiary colors (yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green, yellow-green) are considered hues as well. However, secondary colors (green, orange, purple) are also considered hues. Technically, it involves primary colors (red, yellow, blue). Hue is used to distinguish one color from another. But think of it as a way to identify pure colors. The definition of hue can be a bit confusing, even for people who work with color. The question is, what do these terms really mean? More will be discussed about each one in greater detail below, so if you want to learn more about color theory and how it affects virtually everything you see, all you have to do is keep reading. In color theory, there are certain aspects of a color that can be defined. It’s all about finding creativity through a very specific method. They often refer to these colors as primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Last but certainly not least, it provides them with three tiers of choices when choosing colors that compliment each other. This in turn gives them the opportunity to create an almost endless combination of colors based off the same original color. In addition, visual artists use it to influence how bright, deep, light or dark a particular color is. It centers around the color wheel and how certain colors can be combined in order to create something new. What about the visual artist? This is where you really get into the nuts and bolts of color theory. In much the same way that musicians work with music theory in order to create unique sounds, interior designers work with color theory to create the right look. They have certain boundaries that they work within which allow them to create an aesthetic that their clients want. ![]() For them, it’s all about creating a particular look. On the other hand, an interior designer sees color theory from an entirely different perspective. A marketer might look at color theory in order to alter how a person feels about a product to increase the chances of a sale. Marketers are likely to give you an entirely different definition. For example, it means something entirely different in the visual arts community as compared to the world of interior designers. It largely depends on who you ask and what particular niche you’re talking about. This is largely because the definition of it seems to change from time to time. However, the very idea of color theory can be confusing at times. As such, it may not be surprising that subjects like color theory exist. Since color is so important, a lot of work has gone into studying it in everything from clothing to the paint that goes on your walls. It’s all based on what that individual sees when they walk into a room. In fact, color is so important that it can even make a person feel more or less guarded. Color plays a huge role in creating the right aesthetic. In reality, the way something looks can change a person’s emotions, making them feel more or less comfortable based on the environment that they are in at any given time. Aesthetics are about more than what can be seen with the naked eye. But first, we need to take a look at why color is so important to us.Ĭolor can make all the difference in the world when it comes to having the right atmosphere, sending the right message or making someone want to come back to a particular location. If you’re wondering what hue, value and chroma means and how you work with these three aspects of color, this post will answer all your questions. |
